Sunflower waxes from Kahl

18 September 2024

Kahl and H Foster have enjoyed a partnership that’s spanned over 50 years. Based in Trittau, about 30 Kms northeast of Hamburg, Kahl is at the forefront of natural wax refining. Along with refining the highest quality beeswax, carnauba wax and candelilla wax, Kahl produce a range of high-quality sunflower waxes. Take a look at the different qualities and uses of these waxes:

KahlWax 6607L MB Sunflower

This double-refined, light-coloured hard wax with a high melting point is derived from sunflower seeds as a by-product of sunflower oil production. It is characterised by an outstanding oil-binding capacity and broad compatibility with polar and non-polar emollients. It improves heat resistance and reduces stickiness.

Application:

In oleogels and pigmented pastes, it shows an extraordinary oil binding and high stabilisation capacity. In stick preparations, it forms a rigid crystalline network leading to very hard formulations with good shrinkage. It provides long-lasting surface gloss and has an excellent impact on heat resistance. In emulsions, it provides high oil-binding capacity and a very dry but velvet skin feel, but it’s difficult to stabilise.

KahlWax 6607WOA Sunflower

This light-coloured hard wax with a high melting point is derived from sunflower seeds as a by-product of sunflower oil production. It is characterised by an outstanding oil-binding capacity and broad compatibility with our polar and non-polar emollients. It improves heat resistance and reduces stickiness.

Application:

In anhydrous systems such as stick preparations, it creates very hard formulations, provides long-lasting surface gloss and has an excellent impact on heat resistance. In emulsions, it provides high oil binding capacity and a very dry but velvety skin feel, however, it may be difficult to stabilise.

KahlWax 6607H Hydrolyzed Sunflower

This hard wax is obtained by hydrolysis of pure sunflower seed wax. It is much more hydrophilic and polar than regular sunflower wax and is therefore more suitable for emulsions. It generates a superb velvety skin feel that is ideal for every cream or lotion.

Application:

KahlWax 6607H Hydrolyzed Sunflower provides very high viscosity in W/O emulsions, even at low concentrations (0.5-1.5%) and leads to a butter-like, soft and smooth texture. Used in O/W emulsions, it forms a stabilising network supporting body, texture and substantivity as well as acting like a co-emulsifier, easing the production of several skincare formulations. It can also be used as an alternative to fatty alcohols in hair conditioning and as an opacifier for shampoos and surfactant-based products.
